The ceremony (I should probably say party) went into the night so we were able to do some fun stuff with light painting. I just started the photos so I only will put 1 up. A few friends and I went to the "20th anniversary of Photoshop" party in San Fransisco. This party was put on by the NAPP . It was a great event with some fun information about the new CS5 or CS: next that Adobe is working on right now. While we were there I was able to get a few fun images of the city. We werent there for very long but I think it paid off enough.

Puppy Love Tournament

This last Saturday I was fortunate enough to go shoot the Puppy Love Flyball Tournament in Gridley California. This event was hosted by the cool flyers at Gold Coast Flyers. As some of you know I love dog sports so this was a treat to shoot. It also turns out my shot list from Dog Fancy this month includes dog sports so it was a double bonus. Unfortunately, I had some slight unforeseen events take place on Sunday so I wasn't able to make it for the close of the tournament. This event definitely stretched my skills as a photographer. If you would like to know some of the technical details of shooting this, I will provide below.

If you would like photos of your pups. I generally charge about $5 a photo if you are only interested in a few. What I would like to do though, is extend a discount if you buy the full CD. If you have 10 or more photos, you can purchase them all for $40, if you have less than 10 photos in your set, you can purchase them for $20. -Technical Notes:
So, this one was a nice challenge to shoot. I was facing very, very low lighting (for good action shots anyway). Daylight, tungsten and halogen lights to try to white balance to and on top of all that these dogs move very, very, fast.
If these were humans jumping over small hurdles for tennis balls, I would have just popped out my flash and did some creative lighting. One of my number one rules with shooting groups of dogs though is never use a flash. Some dogs hate it and get scared and run away. Since I couldn't use a flash, I had to use full ambient light (which I mentioned wasnt good at all). What I had to end up doing was putting my 50mm 1.8 (yup, a 1.8. That made capturing those dogs in that shallow depth of field really difficult). Then I had to set my ISO at 1600-2000 (you heard me) and my shutter speed to about 300. That is what it took to capture enough light in the place to TRY to freeze the dogs in place enough to get some detail. Yeah, crazy huh.

Cleer Creek

I went to clear creek the other day and had the craziest experience. I had to cross a creek to get to the falls. Unfortunately for me, it rained the day before and that little creek became a torrent of raging water. Anyway, in true Aaron form, I forded the creek and got to the other side. While walking across the rocks, I stepped into a mud pit and broke my sandal. I went on and took some shots and on my way back (barefoot) I realized I had to cross a field of thorny bushes, a creek with sharp rocks and sticks and walk a long way back to the car on a gravel trail. I took this shot while roaming the Wisconsin countryside. When I saw this dramatic sky unveil in front of me it made me think of Ansel. I think Ansel has been one of the biggest visual influences in my photography. I know that he played around and "manipulated" the images in the dark room but the great thing about his photographs are they make amazing photographs even without the manipulation. Anyway, enjoy.

During my latest trip to Madison Wisconsin, my "uncle" Michael Roberts and I went and ran around the countryside. He took me to this old abandoned farm that was just right off the road. I was a little hesitant because it was cold and the snow was a little deep. Nothing was inherently wrong with deep snow and cold but combine that with the fact I was wearing thin socks and sneakers and that created mixed emotions.

You can usually take your flash mount and combine it with your monopod (assuming you have one). This allows you to get some fun off camera flash shots without needing to set up a light stand or have anybody hold the flash.

For a few bucks at your local supermarket or auto store you can purchase a car sun reflector. When shooting in harsh sunlight you can use this reflector to fill in the shadow side of the subject to give you a little more depth. Notice the lack of harsh shadows the left side when the sun is coming from the right

When taking photos at night, the longer you have your shutter open, the more photons hit your sensor. Merging a short exposure and long exposure at night, will make sure you capture detail where light falls while still maintaining the detail in the lighted areas.

You can use noiseware reduction software as a great way to smooth skin. Noiseware will smooth the skin yet keep all the detail of the skin. http://www.imagenomic.com/ is a great source that I use for noise reduction.

Shooting in RAW will increase the dynamic range of your photos. You can capture up to 16 bits (depending on the camera) of data when JPEG only captures around 8 bits.

These are some of the pups from the Gold Coast Flyers. Flyball is really fun. Dog run at this box as fast as they can (while jumping over hurdles) and hit it with their paws which causes a ball to pop out, which they have to catch in their mouths and run back to the start line, jumping over hurdles on the way. Its cool! More flyball pics can be seen here.

On a side note. Is it me or are "flying dogs" a theme in what I get to shoot

When I went down to the dieselhorst bridge in Redding today I saw some very cool stuff..... along with two homeless men named Chris and Steve.

Oh, and they found this sign that they thought was hilarious and they wanted me to photograph them with it. I decided to try a few different methods of creating HDR images with the bridge but these two are the only ones I am going to put up.

There is something funny about a photo of a dog zipping through the air towards his favorite toy with no fear of falling from the sky or getting wet. they always look like superdogs. we should just call the Shasta Superdogs. Anyway, This day didnt have as many flying dogs because it was a training day but it was still fun to shoot
